Law restricts entry for people with criminal records
An ETA must be refused if you ever received a custodial or suspended sentence of 12 months or more, or were convicted of any offence in the last 12 months. Visit visa applicants with a sentence of 12 months or more must be refused; shorter sentences and non-custodial sentences may lead to refusal.
